Popular approaches to restorative justice in schools frame the practice as a disciplinary model or an alternative to suspension. The Facilitating Restorative Circles program challenges this fundamentally narrow view of RJ. Through practice, video and text-based activities, participants will learn how to use circles to manage their own inter-dependent school groups, build community, make decisions and maintain relationships. Each participant will facilitate a circle and gain a deeper understanding of the role of the facilitator in community building circle processes.

When practiced with intention, restorative justice processes in schools create spaces within which young people can be their culturally authentic selves. Additionally, restorative practices have been shown to narrow the racial discipline gap that represents one of the many ways our schools reproduce institutional racism. At Restorative Practice NYC, we believe that human-centered practices can help dismantle patterns of oppression in schools. This program offers an in-depth approach to restorative work through a racial justice and culturally responsive lens with the explicit intention of creating a more equitable and just school community.

What are the components of a transformative training? The answer to this question lives in the room as ToT participants collectively brainstorm the needs of their school leaders and troubleshoot potential obstacles to effective turnkey training. Through a series of role-playing activities, each member of the ToT group will teach a component of the restorative justice continuum of school-based practices in a workshop model that incorporates circle practice. This day is framed within a horizontal learning model, relying on the support and feedback of the participants to problem-solve and hone each trainer’s particular skill set.
